The 2008 Montrachet from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti ranks among not only the best vintages that I have tasted from the domaine, but possibly the greatest white Burgundy I have ever tasted. The nose is breathtaking in terms of its precision and mineralité. There are not overt, easily definable aromas in situ, more an articulation of the vineyard that translates every single atom where it came from. The palate is bewitching in terms of its perfect bead of acidity, laser-like focus and the vein of salinité that leaves you begging for more. This is close to perfection. Tasted at the mature white Burgundy dinner in Hong Kong.

 Pale, bright yellow. Wonderfully nuanced, perfumed aromas of ripe pineapple, menthol, honey, spearmint, vanilla, caramel and wild herbs; a bit less exotic than usual for this young wine. Outstanding texture and intensity, but with less exotic ripeness (just 14%) and coconutty oak to get in the way of the pure, sharply chiseled notes of acacia blossom, wild herbs, spearmint and soil. Brisk acidity gives cut and penetration to the extremely long, delineated finish. There's a bit of subtle botrytis character here but it only serves to contribute to the wine's glyceral texture. Splendid, and built for long aging.

An exceptionally ripe and overtly exotic nose of genuinely mind-boggling complexity displays botrytis notes, pineapple, apricot, mango, spice, white peach and citrus aromas. The broad-shouldered and extremely concentrated flavors are plush and opulent before culminating in an incredibly intense finish that is given lift and shape by the very firm acid spine. This is a massive Montrachet with superb power and the balance and mid-palate concentration will permit it to live for decades. A knockout.

Exhibits a gorgeous nose of toffee, vanilla bean, pastry and hazelnut cream. On the palate, lime and grapefruit flavors emerge, with hints of citronella and peach. Both opulent and elegant, this is a great Montrachet.
