The storied history of Château Musar began in the 1930’s when Gaston Hochar returned from a trip to Bordeaux. He planted his first vineyards near the Bekaa Valley villages of Aana and Kefraya on gravelly soils over limestone. In 1941, Gaston’s son Serge met Major Ronald Barton (of Château Langoa Barton and Léoville Barton) who was stationed in Lebanon during World War II. The two became friends and often discussed winemaking. Early on, this helped in defining the Bordelais style of Musar. After completing his winemaking studies at the University of Oenology in Bordeaux under the instruction of Émile Peynaud, Serge became the head winemaker of Musar in 1959.
By 1977 Serge finalized what was to become the flagship wine of the estate, The Château Musar Red, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Cinsault. Michael Broadbent discovered Château Musar at the Bristol Wine Fair in 1979, declaring the 1967 Musar the “find of the fair”. Musar created a UK company, and the wines were then offered in Europe for sale. Decanter nominated Serge as their first “Man of the Year” in 1984. This is one of the most singular wines in the world, its haunting bouquet only emerging after years in bottle. This special evening will be a treat even for the most seasoned oenophile.
