I have had Gaja’s 1985 Barbaresco Costa Russi on a number of occasions, but this particular bottle was especially glorious. There are few Piedmont vintages that deliver as much pleasure today as the 1985s do, but provenance is key, as this bottle demonstrated.

Remarkable in its concentration and elegance, with marvelously focused raspberry and cherry flavors and hints of chocolate and anise. Muscular; without an ounce of excess weight and with just a touch of tannin to lose. *#13 Top 100 Wines of 1988*
