Italian wine lovers rejoiced at the regalia in what was arguably the greatest collection of Italian wine ever to come to auction in Acker’s two-evening, “Viva Italia!” sale on Wednesday and Thursday in Delaware that realized US$6 million in sales and achieved 309 New World Records. The company’s first-ever tribute to the great wines of Italy, the auction included consignments direct from five of Italy’s most important estates: Bruno Giacosa, Ceretto, Giuseppe Quintarelli, Ornellaia, and Antinori. Additionally, the sale included the first-ever NFTs from Burgundy as Acker offered the worldwide debut of the 2019 vintage from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair accompanied by unique digital assets.

Italy invaded the Top Ten Lots of the auction with a complete, 49-bottle super vertical of Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 1968-2018 (no 1969 or 1973 were produced), tying for fourth place at $37,350, while a 225-liter barrel of 2020 Antinori Tignanello and four bottles of 1978 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva shared the seventh spot at $29,880 each. It was six magnums of 1989 Chateau Petrus in original wood that took the top lot in the auction, fetching an impressive $74,700, followed by three bottles of 2011 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee Conti in banded OWC in second place for $56,025. A single magnum of 1991 DRC Romanee Conti in OWC seized the third position at $49,800. Sharing fourth place with the Sassicaia was six bottles of 2010 Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee in OWC that realized $37,350, while one bottle of 2009 Domaine Leroy Musigny captured the sixth position, selling for $32,370. Rounding out the three-way tie for seventh was a three bottle OWC of 2010 DRC Montrachet at $29,880. Another three-way tie polished off the Top Ten, with six bottles of 2011 DRC La Tache in banded OWC, six magnums of 2011 Chateau Le Pin in OWCs, and twelve bottles of 2012 Chateau Le Pin in OWCs each achieving $27,390.

From the five direct consignments from Italy’s most iconic estates, each producer offered some exceptional offerings that made the record books, as 158 New World Records were set by the Italian offerings in this auction alone. Direct from Bruno Giacosa, three magnums of 2007 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga, Riserva in OWC fetched $5,229. From Ceretto, an exclusive experience lot including dinner for two at the incredible, three Michelin-starred Piazza Duomo in Alba for two, a one-night stay, and a tasting and tour at Ceretto Bricco Rocche winery fetched $3,486 for a couple of lucky gastronomes. A rarely seen double magnum of 1988 Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva skyrocketed to $12,450. From Ornellaia, one Imperial of the 2016 vintage collected $2,739. Antinori’s wide-ranging selection included not only the previously mentioned barrel of 2020 Tignanello but also double magnums of 2015 and 2016 Solaia realizing $2,365 and $2,988 respectively. Other notable world records out of Italy include six bottles of 1997 Gaja Sperss at $5,603, twelve bottles of G. Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia in OCB at $12,450, and twelve bottles of 1999 Soldera Brunello di Montalcino Case Basse Riserva at $14,940.

The auction was made more superlative due to the inclusion of the global debut of the 2019 vintage from the acclaimed Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, accompanied by the first-ever NFTs from Burgundy, which fetched US$61,752 overall, a remarkable 332% above the low estimate. This historic Domaine traces its roots back to the Napoleonic Wars when it owned some of the Cote d’Or’s most renowned vineyards. The seventh Comte Louis-Michel Liger-Belair now serves as proprietor of the Vosne Romanée-based Domaine, and the estate has flourished over the last twenty years under his deft touch. In the auctioned collection of sixteen, single bottle lots, every wine the Comte produced in 2019, wines hammered as high as 423% above the high estimate.

“What an auction!,” extolled Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “I’m not sure where to begin in recapping such an exciting and multi-faceted sale. Viva Italia! It was tremendous to see Italian wine lovers from all over the globe emerge with their passion for these wines, a passion that can only be equaled by the Italians themselves. To achieve 158 New World Records for just the Italian wines in this sale alone is a spectacular feat, underlined by the direct consignments from Italy’s most important estates. We rarely see such breadth and depth of an assortment of Italian wines, and bidders responded accordingly. It was also thrilling to represent the first Burgundy NFTs alongside the global debut of the 2019 vintage from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. It was clear that the NFTs added significant value for buyers and enhanced the overall fine wine experience in a way never before seen. We’ve already launched our next sale in Hong Kong, where Comte Liger-Belair will be the star of the show once more with 31 lots direct from his cellars, including the first-ever barrel lot from the Domaine, amongst US$10M in wine total! We’re also putting the finishing touches on our next sale, a triple cellar extravaganza, “The Trinity Collection,” coming to auction on June 9th and 10th, with an additional $10M in fine wine, turning up the heat one more notch as we head into summer!”

The auction season continues for Acker with another “live online” auction in Hong Kong on May 28th and 29th and returns to Delaware on June 9th and 10th. Acker is currently accepting wines for its Spring “live online” auctions, with weekly web auctions closing every week. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
