Three of the top lots in Acker’s June Hong Kong Auction:
Lot 709: 12 bottles 1999 DRC La Tache in OWC
Lots 892, 893: 3 bottles each 2007 and 2010 Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee in OWC
Lot 814: 10 bottles 2001 Domaine Leroy Chambertin

Bidders brought the action to Acker’s spirited two-day auction on Thursday, June 11th and Saturday, June 13th in Hong Kong, resulting in over HKD$50 Million in sales. With bidding recorded from all corners of the globe, fierce battles ensued over lots direct from the cellar of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, which collectively sold for 30% over the offering’s high estimates. Hong Kong and China continued to quell their thirsts in the feverish “live online” sale as they get back to business. 190 New World Records were achieved, and the auction’s resounding success was a promising sign for the region in general.

Once again, Burgundy led the charge in the Top Ten Lots of the sale, with a unique and rare original wooden case of 12 bottles of 1999 Domaine de la Romanee Conti La Tache realizing a whopping HKD$843,200/USD$108,800. Second place in the sale was graced by the Queen of Burgundy, as ten bottles of 2001 Domaine Leroy Chambertin sold for HKD$595,200/USD$76,800. DRC returned for the third and fourth positions, with three bottles of 2005 Romanee Conti and ten bottles of 1990 DRC La Tache achieving HKD$496,000/USD$64,000 and HKD$446,400/USD$57,600, respectively. The wines of Comte Liger-Belair provided a welcome DRC interlude as six bottles of 2010 La Romanee took fifth place at HKD$347,200/USD$44,800, while DRC returned as six bottles of 2009 DRC Montrachet captured sixth place at HKD$322,400/USD$41,600. Comte Liger-Belair returned as six bottles of 2009 La Romanee came in seventh, selling for HKD$297,600/USD$38,400. The Top Ten Lots were closed out by a string of top Bordeaux with a six bottle OWC of 2000 Chateau Le Pin and three parcels of twelve bottle lots of 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild all selling for HKD$248,000/USD$32,000. Tenth place in this formidable lineup went to a twelve bottle OWC of 1982 Chateau Latour, which realized HKD$223,200/USD$28,800. The impressive auction saw 39 lots sell for USD$20,000 or more.

An incredible consignment direct from the cellars of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair drew bidders to the auction dance floor beginning with the worldwide debut of the Nuits St. Georges villages bottling, as a six bottle OWC of the 2017 vintage sold for HKD$18,848/USD$2,432. From Vosne Romanee, six bottles of the 2015 Clos du Chateau Monopole achieved an impressive HKD$47,120/USD$6,080, three rare bottles of 2013 Les Petits Monts sold for HKD$29,760/USD$3,840, three bottles of 2014 Aux Reignots soared to HKD$42,160/USD$5,440 while one magnum of 2012 Aux Brulees realized an amazing HKD$64,480/USD$8,320. From the Grand Crus, one magnum of 2017 Clos de Vougeot achieved HKD$37,200/USD$4,800 and one magnum of 2008 Echezeaux brought in HKD$42,160/USD$5,440. The most expensive lot from this prestigious consignment was a three bottle OWC of 2010 La Romanee, which captured HKD$188,480/USD$24,320. Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair set an incredible fifteen New World Records overall, even more so given the fact that there were only sixteen eligible (non-mixed) lots on offer. Also noteworthy was the fact that Madame Leroy and Emmanuel Rouget also achieved fourteen New World Records as Burgundy’s star continued to shine.

“Wines direct from the cellar of our great friend Comte Liger-Belair make any ordinary auction extraordinary,” said Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “This was already a pretty impressive auction as it was our first full-fledged auction in Hong Kong since the onset of the pandemic, and it was tremendous to once again feel that energy that the market always brings. It is clear that China and Hong Kong are definitely back in business! In fact, due to popular demand since travel is still very limited, we’ve added another auction in Hong Kong on July 11th, which we are putting the finishing touches on this week in advance of our June 24th and 25th sale in New York City. It’s been an incredible year thus far, and we’re already working on our autumn sales to keep our auction schedule action-packed. Anyone considering selling should take notice; despite all the challenges the world has faced, our Bicentennial Anniversary has been an amazing year for Acker.”

The auction season continues for Acker “live online” in New York on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, June 24th and 25th, and in Hong Kong on Saturday, July 11th. Acker is always accepting wines for consignment. Weekly web auctions are closing every week. Acker is hosting Virtual Vintage Tastings with John Kapon on Zoom on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8pm ET and Fridays at 12:30pm ET with some of the food and wine world’s most interesting guests through the end of June.
